Key leadership competencies that emerge from a growing body of research in this area includes self-awareness, flexibility and a commitment to ongoing development.  When asked recently to define the characteristics necessary for success, leaders cited “interpersonal skills, especially “influencing across organisational boundaries” more often than strengths in areas such as business strategy or accounting.
